When the anal glands are overactive or infected, issues arise. Swollen, itchy, and even infected anal glands can develop in your pet if they cannot produce feces regularly to express them.

Dogs are frequently observed rubbing their back ends on the floor, while cats lick at the tail area, yet both may suffer from anal gland problems. The anal glands are structures positioned around the rectal orifice at 4 and 8 o’clock. Their function in wild animals is most likely scent marking, and whereas wild animals can express their anal glands willingly, our dogs and cats cannot. When they are scared, they will tell the anal glands, but most of the time, they will empty with bowel motions and roam around.
The substance found in the anal glands is typically a thin liquid with a fishy odor. The anal glands may become infected and diseased if the substance thickens and is not produced regularly. Infectious anal glands are uncomfortable and can occasionally open and drain purulent material mixed with blood, giving the impression that your pet is bleeding from the rectum.
If your pet commonly has anal gland problems, we can occasionally aid with diet adjustments or food supplements. You could learn to express the glands yourself or have us do it. In severe situations, the anal glands may need to be removed.
